Fashions at the 2014 EMMYS

The Best & Worst Dressed List

I love the Emmys. Fashion and TV in one night (two of my favorite things) and Television seems extra hot right now with big movie stars & Netflix blowing up the small screen which all makes for a night of ridiculously amazing fashions.

Best Dressed

January Jones - This Mad Men star followed the red trend of the evening though the textured fabric has a little something extra, which added some rich depth. It is broken up with sleek black accents. My favorite thing about this dress is the shape, how it cuts shorter in the front before trailing in the back. It is the perfect way to show off those killer black shoes. I also liked her messy bangs. Get it Betty.

Keke Palmer - Her stunning sapphire gown made her a fashion stand out. However, from the side could almost see her entire breast at times. I realize showing a little side-boob is hot right now but there are limits and things like tape to help avoid showing the goods.

Julia Roberts - She dazzled all in a blue gem mini dress which showed off her legs. This woman still puts the pretty in Pretty Woman and she did it wonderfully. I am also shocked she didn't win for her role in The Normal Heart, though I love Kathy Bates in Coven.

Hayden Patinierre - This is how a woman with a baby bump should dress for the red carpet. She was channeling Greek goddess in a silver/nude number that accentuated her curves in all the right ways.

inVision Tonya Wise/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Thank You Cam

Taylor Schilling - Taylor strutted her stuff in this simple yet elegant nude dress. The earring cuff she wore that covered the bottom of her earlobe was brilliantly chosen and deserved a second picture. I think she looks wonderful but I can't help wonder why she didn't work a pop of orange into her ensemble- even a piece of jewelry or her clutch.

Gwen Stefani - The rockstar channeled Donatella and Cleopatra in this hot two piece by Versace. I love when rockstars dress up for award shows, sparkles and all.

Honorable Mention

Sarah Hyland - The Modern Family star showed us just how grown up she is in this two piece eye catching getup. The skirt color is spot on, standing out from the carpet. Though differing in length and color it reminds us of a number Jessica Alba wore this award season.

inVision Evan Agostini/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Arrivals
(Source: AP Images)

Allison Janey - She was winning all night in this purple design along with the awards she received for Mom (which she rocks in by the way). It is sexy and yet also age appropriate and the color is so striking. Rack'em up gurl.

inVision Dan Steinberg/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Press Room
(Source: AP Images)

Sofia Vergara - She of course looked amazing in this white dress - enough to stand on a rotating pedestal while the EMMY guy gave his spiel. Though the stunt has been criticized the dress is remains free of criticizing. She claimed her boyfriend Joe Maginello was too hot for the red carpet. I think she didn't want any attention taken away from her. I mean his character died on True Blood, way to be there for your man.

inVision Vince Bucci/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Show

Uzo Aduba - It maybe because we are so used to her hairstyle and jumpsuit from Orange is the New Black but Uzo looked absolutely fabulous in this. She rocked her ruffled, trailing gown like Crazyeyes rocks the crazy.

Julia Louis Dreyfus - She beamed in this sharp dress by Carolina Herrera. Though simple, I thought she looked beautiful in it and somehow it reminded me a little of her character Selina Meyers but maybe because of the patriotic red. She keeps winning statues anyway.

inVision Evan Agostini/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA 7814 HBO's Post Emmy Awards Reception

Laverne Cox - She made history by being the first nominated transgender to walk the red carpet and she did it justice. She is a vision in white from head to toe. I agree with Kelly Osborne that she looks like a princess.

Heidi Klum - She donned a coral frock by fellow Project Runway Judge Zac Posen. The gown was modern, fun and conservative, especially for Heidi!!! (No legs, no boobs, and no back shown). Way to remind everyone exactly why you deserve to be kicking people off as a judge. Zac looks cute too but those curls....

Worst Dressed

Lena Dunham - Oh gurl. I like that you are trying different things and taking risks but this is getting out of control in a elongated pink tutu with a awkward blouse kind of way. The hair is so severe. Your personality is super cute though.

inVision Dan Steinberg/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Limo Drop-Off
(Source: AP Images)

Kerry Washington - Ok, so while I love Miss Washington I don't love what she is wearing by Prada. The color looks great on her but I don't know about the bedazzled piping and the visible bejeweled navy slip. I think this was simply a bit of a miss and that is because normally she sets the bar so high.

66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Red Carpet
(Source: AP Images)

Christina Hendricks - So while I like the idea of an Indian inspired gown this just didn't play out the way I wanted it to. The dress, while pretty, looks a little tortured. Red is an extremely hard color for redheads to pull off. I am not saying it can't be done but it takes a certain shade or tone to do so. I would have loved to have seen her in blue, emerald or even purple. Next time call Sandhya honey.

Claire Danes - So I am not crazy about this dress. I like specific elements but put all together I think it kind of looks a little hot mess. It is almost as if they asked Carrie Bradshaw to show up wearing red and this is what happened. I like the lace cutouts and the ruby embellishments around the neck. The shape does nothing for her body. I didn't see the back until later which is what really makes this dress. That said, we don't walk down the red carpet backwards now do we. I am also considering the possibility it is soooo French that I just can't wrap my little American head around it.

The Men

Matthew McConaughey & Woody Harrelson - I simply loved his dark blue tux and only loved it more when you realized he and Woody coordinated their formal wear. I also like that they opted for black shirts instead of white.

inVision Vince Bucci/Invision/AP A ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 66th Primetime Emmy Awards - Show

Kit Harrington - I know that we all love his flowing locks (the love locks) but I actually like that he slicked it back into the man bun. He wore a classic Armani Tux with Jimmy Choo shoes. You know nothing, Jon Snow - well maybe a little something.

Fashions at the MTV Movie Awards

The Best & Worst Dressed List

This awards show is the time for fun, experimentation, and big risks. It is the "college phase" of the award season, if you will.

Best Dressed:

Rita Ora - Rita brought the heat in this divine, black number with pockets. She showed the perfect amount of cleavage, her side swept hair was gorgeous, and though you can't read the writing, that cute little black clutch says "Hold it" in gold, glittery letters. She was doing just that; mama's holding it down!! Plus, this goddess ripped open Zac Efron's shirt for all of us. Thank you Rita, thank you.

Jessica Alba - Rita's co-presenter held her own in this darling two piece ensemble. The proportions of the two pieces work well for her and showing the mid-drift is on point this season. The soft yellow is the perfect spring color and she countered the softness with appropriately edgy accessories.

Chrissy Teigen - This pale pink frock is one of my favorites of the evening. The shape and lines give the gown the illusion of effortlessly, flowing movement. The small detail scattered across the bottom remind me of  floating dandelions. Her sharp black shoes ground the look.

inVision Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals

Katie Stevens - The sheer cutouts of this dress push the envelope in all the right ways while also celebrating her curves. I wish she would have added a pop of color with a clutch but her thinly strapped shoes mimic the lines within the dress.

(Source: AP Images)

Jerry Ferrara - Though Adrian Grenier is looking good Jerry Ferrara is making us question if he should have played the role of the movie star. The blue jacket is freaking amazing from the color to the cut of the lapels. It stands out amidst the crisp, collarless white shirt. Way to show up Vince - touche Turtle, touche.

inVision John Shearer/Invision/AP a ENT CPAENT CA USA INVL 2014 MTV Movie Awards - Red Carpet

Tyler Hoechline - I know the denim jacket is a risk because it is cut in a traditional fashion but I just love the way it turned out. The fit, added zippers, and other fine detail take it to the next level. The dude is also rocking some cool shoes.

Best Undressed:

Zac Efron - See below. That is all.

Worst Dressed:

Pia Mia - Umm.....I love lavender. It is a wonderful color but girl has done it all wrong. The sheen of the fabric makes it look cheap and the cut of the bottom is all kinds of bunched up. Also, please someone explain the matching lavender bandana to me.

(Source: AP Images)

Jill Wagner - I want to like this dress but it just keeps rubbing me the wrong way. The pink of the inside of the tail looks cartoonish and though the straps are maybe a cool idea, they also draw attention to her knees, which isn't a good thing.

inVision Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals
(Source: AP Images)

William Poulter - I get that the suit is probably some microfiber fabric or something but it looks like he picked it up off his bedroom floor before getting dressed. This look also begs for a pop od color.

inVision Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals
(Source: AP Images)

Honorable Mention:

Lupita N'yongo - This dress puzzles me but I do like it. It's colorful and playful but it also has  a lot going on - but I don't know if I should remove the shoulder pieces of the black lines on the bottom. I love her hair, her makeup, and those baby blue shoes are to die for.

inVision Jordan Strauss/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 MTV Movie Awards - Arrivals
(Source: AP Images)

Drake Bell - The suit is great; way to work the watery blues but please leave the white Keds at home because your grandma is probably looking for them everywhere. I also think a darker tie could have anchored the look but some dress shoes would have also done that.

Netflix has announced that Jane Fonda and Lilly Tomlin will be starring in a original comedy series, written and created by Marta Kaufman, co-creator of Friends. I don't know if you remember a little movie called 9 to 5 but this sounds like it will be fabulously funny. There will be 13 half hour episodes in the season and in Netflix fashion, will most likely be distributed in a watch at your own pace fashion. All we need is a special appearance by Dolly Parton to have a complete reunion of the original trio; ladies take note and make it happen. (USA Today)

In other TV news there are rumors of The Comeback returning for additional season. This hidden gem from 2005 was created by Michael Patrick King and starred Lisa Kudrow as a washed up actress from the early 90's. In the series she attempts her comeback on a new television series only to find ,to her surprise, she is playing an older, less sexy role than when she was considered TV's "it girl. The mockumentary series helped to launch the careers of both Malin Akerman and Kellan Lutz but was not renewed after its first season. Who else is ready for more cupcake dream scenes? Honey Maid, the company that produces our favorite graham crackers is just amazing. They debuted a advertising campaign that celebrates all kind of families (there are two dad's with an infant) and did something so phenomenal with the negative comments - that it transformed them into something positive. Brilliant marketing!!!!  (Instinct Magazine)

In honor of Game of Thrones premiering in less than two weeks, here are fashions from the star studded premiere in NYC plus the super cool dragon installation below. I have to say that Carice van Houten (Melisandre or the Red Woman) is my favorite dressed star. Lena Headey (Cersei) and Emilia Clarke (Danerys) look pretty fierce too and I love that what they're wearing nods to their on screen characters. The makeup/wardrobe folks sure do ugly up Gwendoline Christie to play Brienne of Tarth. Check it out here. (VanityFair)

Oscar Fashions

Fashions & More at the Oscars

by J. Denton Bricker

I have to say that these Oscars were wrapped up in a big bow of gay this year. It is kind of like our Superbowl, right? We had Ellen, The Wizard of Oz 75th anniversary commemoration, Jared Leto won for playing a transgender role & gave a phenomenal acceptance speech, John Travolta debuted a new hairpiece, and Will Smith wore an ascot. Bette Midler and Idina Menzel both belted out divalicious songs too! Ellen was a wonderfully funny host, I love her suits, and her pink Glinda dress! She did kind of fizzle out at the end but I guess it is a long night. Seeing her pass out pizza to movie stars cracked me up and I loved the selfie shot chucked full of celebrities.

Billy Murray's shoutout to Harold Ramis was sweet. Did anyone else notice Cory Monteith's absence from the In Memoriam reel? You know Lea Michelle is pissed. Whoopi introduced The Wizard of Oz set and lifted her dress to reveal long, striped socks like the wicked witch of the east and ruby slipper stripper heels. Pink's performance of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was just fantastic from the nostalgic clips running on the screen, to Pink's stellar voice. Her stunning gown looked to be made from ruby slippers and it had a plunging neckline that showed just enough. I can imagine Liza cringing in her seat, gripping her sister's hand as she mumbled about why she wasn't asked to sing and that Judy was her mother. You know she was pissed about Ellen's comment about drag queens. Bette Midler sang "Wind Beneath My Wings" live for the first time for her Hollywood peers and Idina Menzel sang "Let it Go".

Best Dressed:

Cate Blanchett - This best actress nominee should win the Oscar for her fashion choices alone throughout the entire award season. Her fabulous nude dress adorned with ice/diamonds/crystals/sequins looked like something out of Frozen. Giorgio Armani, she mentioned it was heavy but it looked so light and the chandelier earrings were a perfect balance. The girl worked those snowballs hard.

Lupita Nyong'o - She wore an amazing, yet simple duck egg blue dress, with a silver headband to make it looks all the more like a fierce Roman Domina. Her acceptance speech was adorable and inspiring. Look at her work it!

Charlize Theron - She looked divine and polished in a black gown by Dior that accentuates her curves in all the right way. The light straps give the illusion of strapless which give it a needed lightness on top.

86th Academy Awards - Arrivals
(Source: AP Images)

Jennifer Lawrence - She is becoming a fall expert as she fell over an orange cone on the red carpet immediately after exiting her car; what a way to make an entrance and of course Ellen teased her about it. She looked gorgeous in bold, strapless, persimmon Christian Dior with blown back hair and simple accessories. I am not crazy about the peplums from the front as I am from the back. She also wore a necklace that drapes in the back; she is working that trend.

Kate Hudson - She has laid the foundation for a comeback with this startling beautiful and fabulous, shimmering silver frock. K-Hud is open for business.

Amy Adams - She donned a striking, deep blue 50's inspired Gucci Couture gown with tangerine earrings that popped.

Sandra Bullock - She impressed all in a navy gown conjuring images of old Hollywood glamor by Alexander McQueen.

Honorable Mention:

Kerry Washington - She glowed in a lavender gown by Jason Woo but her dark lipstick was a bit severe.

inVision Evan Agostini/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party

Angelina Jolie - She looked voluptuous in a metallic sheer combination form fitting dress that showed the perfect amount of skin. Her hottest accessory would be none other than Brad Pitt.

(Source: AP Images)

Anne Hathaway - She wore a sleek in black Gucci with a glittering jeweled top.

(Source: dailymail.co.uk)

Meryl Streep - She wore a forgettable white/black ensemble with a glittering belt but let's be real, she can wear whatever the hell she wants. She could wear a burlap sack and no one would blink. Meryl is winning.

86th Academy Awards - Arrivals

Worst Dressed:

Naomi Watts - She looked crisp and clean in a white dress by Calvin Klein though somehow I can't help but picture white lint balls all over it.

inVision Evan Agostini/Invision/AP a ENT CA USA INVW 2014 Vanity Fair Oscar Party
(Source: AP Images)

Julia Roberts - She wore an edgy black lace gown that was pretty but just wasn't the most memorable and the peplums bothered me here. It reads just a little old and it could be worn to a funeral.

86th Academy Awards - Arrivals

Sally Hawkins - She looks like Diane Keaton from Father of the Bride, which looked good in 1990 but in 2014 looks ridiculous and way too big. Maybe throw in a little of Lydia's wedding dress from Beetlejuice too.

86th Academy Awards - Arrivals

Penelope Cruz - She wore a pale pink sheet cinched at the waist by a black bow and she struggled with it over her shoulder throughout the night. A lot of folks liked this one but it just wasn't my favorite and caution must be exercised with such a pale color. There was nothing majorly redemptive about it like bright color or shape, which made Lupita's gown work so well.

Jennifer Garner - This just reads awkward. I want to like it because I like her but I just don't know if eight different rows of silver fringe really belong at the Oscars and the plain top isn't doing it any favors. I do like the color though.
